Mountain View's housing spans more than a century of building. The neighborhoods flanking Castro Street hold Craftsman and Spanish-Revival bungalows and scattered Victorians developed between the late 1800s and World War II, while mid-century ranch houses and later single-family homes fill the city's other residential tracts. Newer townhomes, condominiums, and apartment buildings cluster near downtown, transit, and the North Bayshore area, reflecting ongoing demand from the tech workforce. Mountain View's public schools are organized across two districts. The Mountain View Whisman School District serves preschool through eighth grade, operating nine elementary schools and two middle schools for a diverse student population of roughly 4,700. High school students attend the Mountain View–Los Altos Union High School District, which serves Mountain View and Los Altos. Mountain View is one of the better-connected cities in Silicon Valley.
