Lake Elsinore's housing stock reflects its layered history. Around the lake and historic downtown, older homes and cottages recall the city's early resort era, while the hillsides hold custom and view-oriented properties. Larger master-planned and newer subdivisions — including Canyon Hills and Summerly — offer contemporary single-family homes with community amenities, often on smaller lots than the older acreage properties in the foothills. Lake Elsinore is served by the Lake Elsinore Unified School District (LEUSD), formed in 1989 through the merger of the elementary and high school districts. The district serves a wide area of Southwest Riverside County, including Lake Elsinore and neighboring communities, with elementary, middle, and high schools plus alternative programs. Families moving into the city's newer master-planned communities generally attend LEUSD schools. The district's size and range of programs reflect the city's growth from a small resort town into a substantial Inland Empire suburb.

Interstate 15 is Lake Elsinore's principal freeway, running north-south along the city and connecting to Corona, the Inland Empire, and San Diego to the south. The Ortega Highway (State Route 74) crosses the Santa Ana Mountains westward to San Juan Capistrano and Orange County, offering a scenic but winding alternative route. Most residents commute by car, and the city functions as a bedroom community for employment centers in Riverside, Orange, and San Diego counties. Metrolink rail service is available in nearby communities, and Ontario International Airport serves the region to the north.

Lake Elsinore itself is the centerpiece of recreation — a roughly 3,000-acre natural freshwater lake with more than 14 miles of shoreline open to swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, wakeboarding, water skiing, and jet skiing. Public launch ramps and beaches provide access. Away from the water, the Ortega Highway corridor and surrounding hills offer paragliding, hiking, mountain biking, and off-road riding, continuing the city's long motorsports tradition through events such as the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix. Community parks and the lakefront walkways round out the recreational landscape, along with seasonal events tied to the water.
