U.S. Highway 101 runs through Gilroy and is the city's main link to San Jose and the Bay Area to the north and to the Monterey and Salinas regions to the south. State Route 152 crosses the city, connecting east to the Central Valley and west over the mountains toward Watsonville and Monterey Bay. Caltrain commuter rail terminates at the Gilroy station, providing weekday service into San Jose and up the Peninsula. The city is car-dependent for most daily travel, with its freeway position making it a practical base for South Bay commuters.

Gilroy Gardens, a horticulturally themed family amusement park, is the city's signature attraction, while the Gilroy Premium Outlets draw shoppers from across the region. Uvas Canyon County Park and the Santa Cruz Mountains provide hiking and redwood landscapes to the west, and the Monterey Bay coast lies about 40 miles away.
