Dublin's housing stock spans several eras. The city's older central neighborhoods and the historic Old Dublin area retain mid-century and earlier single-family homes, while much of the eastern side of town has been developed with newer master-planned communities such as Dublin Ranch, which offer contemporary single-family homes, townhomes, and condominiums on the former ranch lands. Transit-oriented apartment and townhome communities have risen near the two BART stations, adding higher-density options close to rail. The overall mix gives Dublin a broad range of housing types for a suburban city of its size.

Dublin's neighborhoods divide roughly between the established west side and the newer east side. The Old Dublin and Heritage Park area near the historic crossroads holds the city's original street grid and older homes, while Dublin Ranch and other master-planned communities spread across the eastern hills with newer construction and community amenities. Developments near the Dublin/Pleasanton and West Dublin/Pleasanton BART stations offer transit-oriented living, and the Fallon Road corridor includes newer subdivisions and sports facilities. Adjacent Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Livermore frame the city on three sides.

Dublin is a family-oriented East Bay suburb with a strong commuter orientation and a growing roster of local amenities. The city's retail centers, restaurants, and community facilities cluster along the I-580 corridor and around the Dublin/Pleasanton BART stations, while Stoneridge Shopping Center sits just across the Pleasanton line. Dublin Heritage Park and The Wave, a municipal water park with waterslides, anchor community recreation, and the city's events and cultural programming draw on its rancho and railroad heritage. The Tri-Valley's larger employment and shopping hubs in Pleasanton, San Ramon, and Livermore are all within a short drive.

Dublin is served by the Dublin Unified School District, which enrolls more than 12,300 students from preschool through adult education. The district operates several elementary schools, two middle schools, a K-8 school, a continuation high school, and Dublin High School, the city's comprehensive secondary campus. The district's schools serve a diverse suburban population and are consistently rated among the stronger districts in the East Bay. Nearby higher-education options include Las Positas College in Livermore and the region's universities and community colleges.

Dublin sits at the intersection of Interstate 580 and Interstate 680, two of the East Bay's primary freeways, giving residents direct road access to Oakland, San Francisco, and the Silicon Valley. Two BART stations — Dublin/Pleasanton and West Dublin/Pleasanton — straddle the I-580 corridor and provide rail service across the Bay Area, while the Pleasanton ACE station adds commuter rail toward San Jose. LAVTA Wheels operates local bus and shuttle service linking neighborhoods to the rail stations, making Dublin one of the most transit-connected cities in the Tri-Valley.

Dublin's recreation facilities center on The Wave, a city-owned aquatic facility with a seasonal water park and competitive pools, along with a network of neighborhood parks and sports fields such as those on the Fallon Road corridor. Dublin Heritage Park and Museums and the Dublin Camp Parks Military History Center preserve local history, while the surrounding Tri-Valley offers regional parks, trails, and open space in the nearby East Bay hills. The Iron Horse Regional Trail and Pleasanton Ridge provide additional hiking and cycling opportunities within a short drive.
